7-Day Jamaica Itinerary from the Northwest Coast

A week lets you add the two longer days the five-day plan leaves out, as long as you accept that one of them is mostly spent in a car.

Short answer

Use one base on the northwest coast and treat the week as day trips: arrival, a rest day in Lucea, Negril, an inland river, Martha Brae rafting near Falmouth, a long day to Dunn's River Falls, and Montego Bay before your flight. Negril, Montego Bay and the airport are each about 30 minutes from Lucea, traffic depending. The Ocho Rios day is the only really long drive.

Last checked 4 October 2026. The Dunn's River Falls reopening checked against The Jamaica Gleaner (November 2025), the Martha Brae trip length against the Jamaica Observer (August 2026), and the Montego Bay to Dunn's River Falls drive time against HeyJamaica, a secondary source. Negril and Montego Bay status and resort reopening dates carry over from AFAR, Travel Noire and The Gleaner, as in our 5-day guide. We could not find a current published status for Mayfield Falls, Roaring River or Martha Brae bookings, so confirm those directly.

The 5-day itinerary covers one region comfortably. Seven days gives you room for a rest day and two things further afield: a bamboo raft on the Martha Brae River and Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios. Everything below assumes one base near Lucea in Hanover Parish. It also works from Negril or Montego Bay, with longer drives at one end.

The seven days at a glance

Drive times are from Lucea unless stated and are typical rather than guaranteed. They vary with traffic, time of day and cruise-ship days in Montego Bay.

Days 1 to 3: arrive, rest, Negril

Land at Sangster International (MBJ), stop for groceries, swim and sleep. Day 2 is deliberately empty: walk Lucea's harbour, give Fort Charlotte an hour and spend the afternoon at the beach. Day 3 is Negril, with Seven Mile Beach first and the West End cliffs in the late afternoon. The 5-day itinerary covers these three days in more detail, including the drive home after sunset.

Day 4: inland to a river

Mayfield Falls and Roaring River are the two usual choices, both guided and both wet. Hurricane Melissa hit Westmoreland and St Elizabeth harder than anywhere else in October 2025, and we could not find a published opening status for either attraction, so message the operator before you drive. If neither is running, a second beach day costs you nothing.

Day 5: Martha Brae rafting and Rose Hall

The Martha Brae River is in Trelawny, near Falmouth, east of Montego Bay. Captains pole a bamboo raft downstream, and the Jamaica Observer reported in August 2026 that a trip typically lasts around 75 minutes. The same article says River Raft Limited has run the rafts since 1985. We could not confirm current booking arrangements, so check directly.

Rose Hall Great House, an 18th-century estate with guided tours, sits on the way back toward Montego Bay. Because this day passes through Montego Bay in both directions, leave before the morning rush and expect the return to be slower.

Day 6: Dunn's River Falls, and whether to go

This is the long day. The Jamaica Gleaner reported that Dunn's River Falls reopened in November 2025 after Hurricane Melissa. The park is at Ocho Rios on the north coast, and HeyJamaica puts the drive at about 1.5 hours from Montego Bay, so from Lucea allow more, each way, traffic depending. Start early, bring water shoes and book a driver if you don't want to spend the day behind the wheel.

It is worth it if the falls are on your list. It isn't if you would rather have another beach day, because the round trip uses most of the daylight. You could spend a night in Ocho Rios instead, but then you are changing accommodation, which is the cost this plan is built to avoid.

Day 7: Montego Bay and the flight home

Finish near the airport. Doctor's Cave Beach is a paid-entry beach club with changing rooms and showers, which helps when you have checked out but your flight is later. Leave more time than you think you need for the airport run. Montego Bay is the busiest stretch of this coast, and some resorts there are still being rebuilt, with reopenings scheduled into early 2027 according to The Gleaner.

Who this plan suits, and who should do it differently

It works well if:

  • You want a full week without changing accommodation
  • You are comfortable driving, or paying a driver on the Negril, inland and Ocho Rios days
  • You like quiet evenings and don't need nightlife on the doorstep

Choose a different plan if:

  • You don't want to drive at all and would rather have excursions collect you from a hotel
  • You want Kingston, the Blue Mountains or the south coast, which are long drives from here and usually need their own trip

Ocean Escape is a 2-bedroom villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay, Negril and the airport, traffic depending. It has a full kitchen for the days you'd rather not eat out, and a public beach across the road for the rest day.

Could Ocean Escape fit this trip?

It suits couples, families and small groups who plan to self-cater and drive, and who want one base for the whole week. It's a poor fit if you want to walk to bars at night or have your meals included. For those trips a Negril or Montego Bay resort is the easier choice.

Common questions

Is 7 days enough for Jamaica?

Seven days is enough for the northwest coast plus one long day trip. It is not enough to cover the whole island without spending much of it in a car. This plan keeps one base and adds Martha Brae and Dunn's River Falls to the five-day route.

Can I visit Dunn's River Falls from Lucea?

Yes, as a long day trip. The Jamaica Gleaner reported that the park reopened in November 2025, and HeyJamaica puts the drive at about 1.5 hours from Montego Bay, so from Lucea allow more each way, traffic depending. Check current opening hours with the park before you go.

Do I need a car for a 7-day itinerary?

A hire car or a pre-booked driver makes it work. Negril, the inland day, Falmouth and Ocho Rios are all drives from a northwest-coast base, and Jamaica drives on the left. If you would rather not drive at all, a Montego Bay or Negril hotel with organised excursions is simpler.

Should I add Kingston or the Blue Mountains?

Not to this plan. Both are long drives from the northwest coast and usually work better as a separate trip with their own base. This itinerary stays within a day trip of Lucea.

Are Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios open after Hurricane Melissa?

Tourism corridors were reported as operating in 2026, and Dunn's River Falls reopened in November 2025, but recovery is uneven. Some Montego Bay resorts were scheduled to reopen as late as early 2027 according to The Gleaner, and Westmoreland and St Elizabeth were hit hardest. Confirm individual attractions and hotels before you book.
