Montego Bay vs Negril: Which Area Fits Your Trip?

The two most common bases in western Jamaica, 80km apart on the same road, and two different holidays. This is how to pick.

Short answer

Choose Montego Bay for the shortest airport transfer, the widest choice of hotels and excursions, and livelier nightlife. Choose Negril for Seven Mile Beach, a slower pace and better sunsets, accepting a transfer of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. Montego Bay suits short trips and first visits; Negril rewards stays of a week or more where one long transfer is worth it.

Last checked September 2026. Transfer times and the Montego Bay to Negril route verified against published A1 route data; area characteristics cross-checked against the Jamaica Tourist Board's resort-area guidance; post-hurricane operational status checked against current travel-trade reporting.

Montego Bay and Negril get compared constantly, and most comparisons land on "MoBay is busy, Negril is chilled" and stop there. That's true but it doesn't tell you which one fits the trip you're taking. The decision turns on how long you're staying, how much you care about the beach itself, and what you want your evenings to look like.

Side by side

Compared on the factors that change the trip. Transfer times are typical rather than guaranteed and vary with traffic.

The transfer decides most of it

Everything else on that list comes down to preference. This one is arithmetic. Negril is about 80km from Sangster International along the A1, running west through Hopewell, Lucea and Green Island, and it typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Montego Bay hotels are usually 20 to 40 minutes from the same terminal.

On a ten-night trip, that difference is a rounding error. On a four-night trip, you've spent most of two days on the road and you'll arrive at your first beach on day two. If your stay is short, Montego Bay wins before you've compared anything else.

Beaches: Negril has the better one

Seven Mile Beach is the reason people choose Negril. A long continuous beach you can walk is uncommon in the Caribbean, where the usual pattern is a series of small resort-held coves. You can walk for an hour, stop at a bar, and keep going.

Montego Bay's beaches are smaller and more frequently enclosed within resort property. Doctor's Cave Beach is the well-known public alternative and it's a good beach, but it's a destination you go to rather than a shoreline you wander along.

Pace and evenings

Montego Bay is a working town as well as a resort corridor, and it feels like one: more traffic, more people, more choice. The Hip Strip concentrates the island's busiest nightlife into a walkable stretch, which is exactly right for some trips and exactly wrong for others.

Negril's evenings are quieter and organised around the sunset. The 50-foot height limit does more for the atmosphere than any single venue. With no towers the horizon stays palms and rooflines, and the whole place reads lower and slower.

Which suits which traveller

Montego Bay

First-time visitors, short stays, families who want everything within reach, travellers who want a wide choice of excursions from one point, and anyone who wants to walk to nightlife. Also the safer pick if your flight lands late.

Negril

Couples, honeymooners, long beach days, repeat visitors who know what they want, and anyone whose ideal day is walking a beach rather than booking an activity. Best on stays of a week or more.

The third option: staying between them

Because both sit on the same coastal road, there's a middle answer that rarely appears in the comparison. Hanover Parish occupies the coast between them, with Lucea, the parish capital, roughly 40km east of Negril, which puts it approximately midway between Negril and Montego Bay.

From the property

For reference, our own drive from Montego Bay to Lucea runs about 30 minutes in normal conditions, with a comparable run west to Negril, so both ends of the coast are roughly the same distance away. Treat that as typical rather than guaranteed: the A1 is single-carriageway for most of the route, and traffic around Montego Bay can add to it.

From a base there, a Montego Bay day and a Negril day are both reachable without changing accommodation, which is the main argument for it. The honest counterargument is that you get neither area's convenience: very little resort infrastructure, almost no nightlife, and a real need for a car or arranged transport rather than walking to dinner. It's a good answer for independent and villa stays and a poor one for anyone who wants to step out of reception onto a busy beach.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

The between-the-two base works if:

  • You want both Montego Bay and Negril days from one set of bags
  • You're self-catering, or travelling as a family or group who'd rather have a kitchen
  • You'll have a car or pre-arranged transport, and you want quiet evenings

Pick Montego Bay or Negril outright if:

  • You're staying four nights or fewer, where transfer time dominates
  • You want to walk to restaurants, bars and nightlife
  • You want all-inclusive convenience, or to be on a beach the moment you leave your room

Ocean Escape sits in that middle stretch. It's a 2-bedroom villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay and a similar drive from Negril. Private pool access, a full kitchen, Starlink wifi, solar power and a public beach a short walk across the road.

Could Ocean Escape fit this trip?

Only if the middle base is what you want. It suits self-catering trips with transport where quiet is a feature, not a compromise. If you're choosing Negril specifically for Seven Mile Beach on your doorstep, or Montego Bay for the Hip Strip, stay in those places instead. This isn't a substitute for either.

Common questions

Is Montego Bay or Negril better for a first trip to Jamaica?

Montego Bay is the easier first trip. The airport is there, the transfer is short, and the choice of hotels, restaurants and excursions is the widest on the island. Negril is the better beach, but the transfer means it works best on stays of about a week or longer.

How long is the transfer from Montego Bay airport to Negril?

Roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, covering about 80km along the A1 coastal highway through Hopewell, Lucea and Green Island. Times vary with traffic and road conditions, so treat any single figure as typical rather than guaranteed.

Which has the better beach, Montego Bay or Negril?

Negril, for most travellers. Seven Mile Beach is a long continuous stretch of sand you can walk end to end. Montego Bay's beaches are smaller and more often enclosed within resorts, though Doctor's Cave Beach is a well-known public option.

Which is better for nightlife?

Montego Bay. The Hip Strip is the island's busiest concentration of bars and clubs. Negril's evenings are quieter and centre on sunset spots and beach bars rather than late-night venues.

Can I stay in one place and visit both?

Yes. Both sit on the same A1 coastal road, and the northwest coast between them, Hanover Parish, with Lucea roughly 40km east of Negril, puts you approximately midway. From Lucea the drive to Montego Bay is about 30 minutes in normal conditions, with a comparable run to Negril. It trades nightlife and walkability for access to both ends of the coast, and generally means having a car or arranged transport.
