Lucea is the parish capital of Hanover, west of Montego Bay on the A1 coast road towards Negril. You will not get lost on the way. What catches people out is the arrival itself: a queue at the taxi desk after a long flight, a driver who doesn't know the smaller roads, or a departure pickup booked too tight. Most of that is fixed by choosing the right option before you land.

Official airport taxis
Two companies, JUTA and JCAL, hold the concession to pick up passengers inside Sangster International. They share a single authorised taxi desk just outside the customs exit. You tell the desk where you are going, they quote the fare, and they call a driver. Fares are set by destination rather than metered, so you know the price before you get in.
This is the option for people who don't want to plan anything, and it works well in quiet periods. When several flights land close together you can wait. Have your full address ready, written down, along with any gate or access details. Lucea is small, but a driver who usually runs hotel routes in Montego Bay will not necessarily know a private house off the main road.
Pre-booked private transfers
A private transfer costs more, and for a lot of arrivals it is worth it. The driver tracks your flight, waits in the arrivals hall, and has your address before you land. That matters most for families with car seats and luggage, groups who need a van, and anyone landing late in the day.
Prices vary by operator and vehicle. In October 2026, booking sites listed one-way private sedan transfers from MBJ to Lucea from just under US$60, with larger vans costing more. Treat that as a guide to the range rather than a quote, and confirm whether the price is per vehicle or per person before you pay.
Hiring a car
Lucea is a much easier base with a car. Montego Bay and Negril are each about 30 minutes away in typical traffic, in opposite directions along the coast, and most of the reasons to stay on this stretch involve getting to both. If that is your plan, picking the car up at the airport saves a second transfer.
Jamaica drives on the left, and the A1 is single-carriageway for long stretches, with buses and taxis stopping at short notice. If you have never driven on the left, a first drive straight after a long-haul flight is not the gentlest introduction. Some visitors take a transfer on day one and have a car delivered the next morning instead.
Knutsford Express and Uber
Knutsford Express runs scheduled coaches across the island and lists Lucea among the towns it serves, with only a few departures a day on the routes through Hanover. It is the cheapest way to cover the distance. It also means arriving to a timetable, carrying your bags, and arranging the last stretch from the stop yourself, which suits a solo traveller with a backpack far better than a family.
Uber Taxi, run with the Montego Bay based Maxi Taxi Association, covers parts of Hanover, St James and Westmoreland. It is handy once you are settled. For an arrival, coverage outside town centres is too uneven to rely on, so check the app for your exact address before you count on it.
The Lucea roadworks, autumn 2026
On 5 October 2026 the National Works Agency began rebuilding about 200 metres of Seaview Drive, between the GV Service Station and D&G Hardware. This is the low-lying section at the entrance to Lucea from the Montego Bay side, and it has flooded and broken up repeatedly. The NWA is replacing the asphalt with concrete and has said the work will take about four months. Some reports have quoted a longer period, so check before you travel.
While it runs, the NWA plans single-lane traffic through the site for buses and large vehicles, with smaller cars diverted onto local roads: Old Road for traffic leaving Lucea and Malcolm Heights for traffic coming in. Some work is being done at night to reduce daytime delays. No one has published a standard extra allowance, and in practice it will vary from day to day.
For most visitors this means two things. On arrival, ask your driver or host whether your route goes through the works; accommodation east of the town centre may not. For your departure, ask for a pickup time based on current conditions rather than the usual figure, and give yourself more margin than feels necessary.
Longer term, the NWA has said a phased rehabilitation of the main road from Montego Bay to Negril is planned under its SPARK programme. Elsewhere in Hanover, patching continues on roads damaged by Hurricane Melissa in October 2025. The main coast road is open and in use.
