Where to Stay Between Montego Bay and Negril
Most people pick one end of the coast or the other. There is a third answer, and for some trips it is the right one.
The stretch between them is Hanover Parish, and Lucea is its main town. Staying there puts Montego Bay and Negril within reach of the same base, so you can do both without changing accommodation. It suits villa and self-catering trips with a car. It suits you badly if you want nightlife on your doorstep or an all-inclusive resort.
Last checked September 2026. Town order along the A1 and the position of Lucea verified against published route data; parish landmarks and attractions cross-checked against the Jamaica Information Service parish profile and the Jamaica Tourist Board; post-hurricane operational status checked against current travel-trade reporting.
If you search for where to stay in western Jamaica, you get Montego Bay or Negril. Both are good answers. Neither is the only one, because the 80km of coast road between them is a parish in its own right, with its own towns, beaches and history, and people do stay there on purpose.
This page is about whether you should be one of them.
What is between the two
Hanover Parish. Driving west out of Montego Bay on the A1, you pass through Hopewell, then Sandy Bay, then Lucea, then Green Island, and then you are in Negril. The whole run is roughly 80km and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours end to end, because the road is single-carriageway for most of its length.
Lucea is the parish capital and the natural centre of gravity. It sits on a horseshoe-shaped bay that the parish profile describes as one of the island's safest natural harbours, with Fort Charlotte guarding the entrance. Roughly 40km east of Negril, it lands close to the midpoint between the two resort towns, which is the entire practical argument for basing yourself here.
Which part of the stretch to pick
| Area | Best for | Trade-offs | Leans toward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hopewell and Sandy Bay | Short airport runs, easy Montego Bay access, river trips on the Great River | Closer to the Montego Bay corridor, so less of the quiet you came for | Montego Bay |
| Lucea and around | Splitting the difference properly, a working town with shops and food, villa stays | Not a resort strip; you will drive to most things | The midpoint |
| Green Island | Negril beach days with a quieter base, and a shorter run to Seven Mile Beach | Long way back to the airport, thinnest on amenities | Negril |
| Tryall and Round Hill estates | Golf, tennis, staffed stays, a self-contained resort experience | Priced well above the rest of the parish and deliberately enclosed | Its own thing |
Why people choose the middle
The reason is almost always the same. They want to see both ends of the coast and they do not want to move hotels to do it. A Montego Bay day for shopping, dining and the airport run, a Negril day for Seven Mile Beach and the sunset, and one set of bags for the whole week.
The second reason is quieter beaches. The coast through Hanover has small public beaches and coves that see a fraction of the foot traffic of Doctor's Cave or Seven Mile. That is a real difference in kind, not just in degree.
From our villa in Lucea, both Montego Bay and Negril run about 30 minutes in normal conditions, and the airport is a similar drive. Treat those as typical rather than guaranteed. The A1 is single-carriageway for most of the route, and traffic around Montego Bay, especially on cruise-ship days, can add to it.

What is around you once you are there
More than the map suggests, and most of it is not on the standard excursion list.
In Lucea itself, Fort Charlotte dates to 1746 and was named in 1778 for the queen of the day. The clock tower in the town centre was built in 1817 and still keeps time, which is a better story than most things built in 1817 can claim. The Hanover Museum sits on the site of a prison dating to 1776 and holds the parish's records and artefacts.
Inland and along the coast, the community of Lethe sits on the Great River and is a long-established spot for bamboo rafting. Chukka's Sandy Bay operation runs land and water activities from the same river. Nearer the Negril end, Kool Runnings water park sits just inside the parish boundary. For a view rather than an activity, the hills above Lucea Harbour and Dolphin Head Mountain both look out across the western parishes.
What you give up
This is the part most listings skip, so it is worth being direct about it.
You give up walkability. Outside the town centres there are no clusters of restaurants and bars to stroll to after dinner, and taxis are not circling. You give up nightlife almost entirely; if that matters, Montego Bay's Hip Strip is a 30 minute drive and a designated driver away. You give up the all-inclusive model, because there is very little of it here, which means you are cooking, eating out by car, or arranging a private chef. And on a trip of four nights or fewer, you give up a meaningful slice of the holiday to transfers.
Set against that, the stretch is operational and easy to travel through. Jamaica's western corridors and Sangster International have been running normally through 2026, though individual hotels in Montego Bay were still finishing renovation work, so it is worth confirming any specific property or tour directly.
Who this suits, and who it doesn't
Base between the two if:
- You want Montego Bay days and Negril days from one set of bags
- You are staying a week or more, so the driving pays for itself
- You have a car or a driver arranged, and you are self-catering at least some of the time
- Quiet in the evening is something you want rather than something you tolerate
Pick Montego Bay or Negril instead if:
- Your stay is four nights or fewer
- You want to walk out of reception onto a busy beach, or to bars after dark
- You want food, drink and entertainment bundled into the price
- You would rather not drive on holiday at all
Ocean Escape is a 2-bedroom villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from both Montego Bay and Negril. Private pool access, a full kitchen, Starlink wifi, solar power and a public beach a short walk across the road.
Check your datesCould Ocean Escape fit this trip?
It fits the trip this page describes: a week or more, a car, cooking some of your own meals, and evenings that are quiet on purpose. It is a poor fit for a long weekend, for anyone who wants to walk to nightlife, and for travellers who would rather have a resort handle the logistics. Those trips belong at one end of the coast or the other.

What is between Montego Bay and Negril?
Hanover Parish. The A1 coastal road runs west from Montego Bay through Hopewell, Sandy Bay, Lucea and Green Island before reaching Negril. Lucea is the parish capital and sits on a horseshoe-shaped harbour roughly 40km east of Negril, which puts it near the midpoint of the two.
Is it worth staying between Montego Bay and Negril?
It is worth it if you want to visit both and would rather not pack twice, and if you are happy to drive or arrange transport. It is not worth it for a short trip, for a first visit where convenience matters most, or if you want to walk to restaurants and bars in the evening.
How far is Lucea from Montego Bay and Negril?
Both are about 30 minutes by road from our own villa in Lucea in normal conditions. Treat that as typical rather than guaranteed. The A1 is single-carriageway for most of its length, and traffic around Montego Bay can add to it.
Do you need a car if you stay in Hanover Parish?
Effectively yes. There is little in the way of walkable restaurant and bar clusters outside the towns, and the things worth seeing are spread along the coast and up into the hills. A rental car or a pre-arranged driver makes the difference between a relaxed trip and a stuck one.
Are there resorts between Montego Bay and Negril?
A few, though the parish is known more for villas than for large resorts. Round Hill and the Tryall Golf, Tennis and Beach Club are the two best-known estates in the area, with Tryall occupying a large property outside Lucea. Most accommodation along the stretch is private villas and small guest houses.

This guide is published by Ocean Escape Jamaica, which rents a villa in the stretch of coast it describes. The drive times from the property are our own and are not drawn from a published source. We have named the trips this location suits badly as well as the ones it suits well, and both Montego Bay and Negril are recommended outright where they fit better.
