5-Day Northwest Jamaica Itinerary
Five days is enough to see Jamaica's northwest properly, as long as you stop trying to see the rest of the island at the same time.
Stay in one place and give each day one area. Day 1 is arrival and the beach, day 2 is Lucea and Hanover, day 3 is Negril's Seven Mile Beach with a West End sunset, day 4 goes inland to a river or spring, and day 5 is Montego Bay, closest to the airport. From Lucea, Negril and Montego Bay are each about 30 minutes away, traffic depending.
Last checked 30 September 2026. Negril and Montego Bay operating status and the Rick's Cafe reopening checked against AFAR (January 2026) and Travel Noire (July 2026); resort reopening dates against The Gleaner (14 September 2026); Fort Charlotte against the Jamaica National Heritage Trust; Doctor's Cave Beach against its operator's own site. We could not find a current published status for Mayfield Falls or Roaring River, so confirm those directly.
Most five-day Jamaica plans go wrong in the same way. People book two nights in Montego Bay, two in Negril and a day trip to Dunn's River Falls, then spend the trip in a minibus. The northwest coast is compact enough that you don't need to move at all. This plan assumes a base near Lucea, in Hanover Parish, roughly halfway along the A1 between Montego Bay and Negril. It works almost as well from a Negril or Montego Bay hotel, with longer drives at one end.
The five days at a glance
| Day | Plan | Good for | Trade-offs | Logistics |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Arrive at MBJ, shop, beach | Recovering from the flight | Not much sightseeing | About 30 minutes from the airport, traffic depending |
| 2 | Lucea town, Fort Charlotte, local beach | A slow day close to base | Lucea is a working town, not an attraction | Minutes from base; no long drive |
| 3 | Negril: Seven Mile Beach, then West End for sunset | Beach people and couples | You drive home after dark | About 30 minutes to Negril, traffic depending |
| 4 | Inland: Mayfield Falls or Roaring River | Families and anyone tired of sand | Westmoreland was hit hard by the 2025 hurricane; check before driving | Rural roads; a guide or driver helps |
| 5 | Montego Bay: Doctor's Cave Beach or Rose Hall | Last day before flying | Busiest part of the coast | About 30 minutes to Montego Bay, traffic depending |
Day 1: land, shop and get to the water
Sangster International (MBJ) in Montego Bay is the airport for the whole northwest. The drive to Lucea is about 30 minutes in normal traffic. If you land in the afternoon, plan on a supermarket stop, one swim and an early night. If you're renting a car, pick it up at the airport and do your first drive in daylight. Jamaica drives on the left, which helps UK visitors and takes an hour of concentration for everyone else.
Day 2: Lucea and the Hanover coast
Take a day off from driving. Lucea is Hanover's parish capital and a real harbour town, with a market, a courthouse and a clock tower rather than a resort strip. Fort Charlotte sits on the point of the harbour. It is an 18th-century British fort named after Queen Charlotte, and the Jamaica National Heritage Trust has declared it a national monument. The site isn't managed as a paid attraction, so expect old stone walls and cannon rather than a visitor centre. Give it an hour, then spend the afternoon at the beach.
If you play golf, the Tryall Club is just along the coast towards Montego Bay. Non-members usually have to book through the club, so arrange it before you travel.
Day 3: Negril, beach first, cliffs later
Negril is the reason many people come to this end of Jamaica, and it's the easy day to plan. Spend the morning and early afternoon on Seven Mile Beach, the long stretch of sand north of the town centre, then drive over to the West End cliffs in the late afternoon. Rick's Cafe is the famous sunset stop. Travel reporting says it reopened by mid-December 2025, and Negril came back faster after Hurricane Melissa than the south coast did.
The catch is getting home. Sunset means driving back along the A1 in the dark. If you don't want to do that, book a driver for the evening or have dinner in Negril and leave early.
Day 4: inland to the rivers
This is the day that makes the trip feel like more than a beach week. Mayfield Falls, in the hills on the Westmoreland side of the Hanover border, is a guided walk up a river through shallow pools and small falls. Roaring River, near Petersfield, has a cave and a spring-fed pool known as the Blue Hole. Bring water shoes and a change of clothes for either. Both suit children who can manage wet, uneven rock.
Hurricane Melissa hit Westmoreland and St Elizabeth harder than anywhere else in October 2025. Roaring River as a community was badly damaged. We couldn't find a published update on either attraction's opening status, so call or message the operator before you set off. If neither is running, swap in a second beach day and spend the money on a local guide another time.

Day 5: Montego Bay on the way out
Save Montego Bay for last because it's next to the airport. If you fly late, spend the morning at Doctor's Cave Beach, a paid-entry beach club with changing rooms and showers, which is useful when you've already checked out. With a full day, drive east to Rose Hall Great House for a guided tour of the 18th-century estate. Leave more time than you think you need. Montego Bay is the busiest stretch of this coast, and some resorts there are still being rebuilt, with reopenings scheduled into early 2027 according to The Gleaner.
Who this plan suits, and who should do it differently
It works well if:
- You want Negril and Montego Bay without packing and moving hotels
- You're happy to drive, or to pay a driver on the Negril and inland days
- You like quiet evenings and don't need nightlife on the doorstep
Choose a different plan if:
- You don't want to drive at all and would rather have excursions collect you from a hotel
- Your five days are mostly about Ocho Rios, Dunn's River Falls or Kingston, which are long drives from here
- You want to lie on one beach for five days, in which case a Negril hotel on Seven Mile Beach makes more sense
Ocean Escape is a 2-bedroom villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay, Negril and the airport, traffic depending. It has a full kitchen for the days you'd rather not eat out, and a public beach across the road for day 1 and day 2.
Check your datesCould Ocean Escape fit this trip?
It suits couples, families and small groups who plan to self-cater and drive, and who want one base for all five days. It's a poor fit if you want to walk to bars at night or have your meals included. For those trips a Negril or Montego Bay resort is the better choice.

Is 5 days enough for Jamaica?
Five days is enough for one region, not the whole island. On the northwest coast it covers Negril, Montego Bay and a day inland without rushing. Trying to add Ocho Rios or Kingston usually turns the trip into long drives.
Should I split 5 days between Montego Bay and Negril?
Usually not. Moving hotels costs you most of a day each time. One base with day trips gives you more beach time, and a base between the two, such as Lucea, keeps both within about 30 minutes, traffic depending.
Do I need a car for this itinerary?
A hire car or a driver booked in advance makes it work. Negril, Montego Bay and the inland day are all drives from a northwest-coast base, and Jamaica drives on the left. If you would rather not drive at all, a Montego Bay or Negril hotel with organised excursions is the easier plan.
Are Negril and Montego Bay open after Hurricane Melissa?
Yes. Both were reported operational through 2026, and Rick's Cafe in Negril reopened by mid-December 2025. Some Montego Bay resorts were still scheduled to reopen between late 2026 and early 2027, so check any specific hotel or tour before you book.
What order should I do the five days in?
Keep the arrival day light, do Negril early while you have energy for a late sunset drive home, and leave Montego Bay for the last day because it is closest to the airport. Put the inland river day wherever the weather looks driest.
