Lucea, Jamaica: The Town Ocean Escape Calls Home

Ocean Escape sits in Lucea, the capital of Hanover Parish on Jamaica’s northwest coast, between the larger tourist centres of Montego Bay and Negril. Lucea is a working harbour town rather than a resort strip, with a few hundred years of history built around a naturally sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay.

What Lucea is known for

Lucea’s harbour was considered one of the safest ports on the island, which is part of why the town grew into Hanover’s administrative and trading centre from the 18th century onward. Fort Charlotte, built in 1761, still overlooks the harbour. The town’s clock tower, dating to 1817, remains functional and stands near the old courthouse in the centre of town. Hanover Parish Church, dating to around 1725, is the oldest building in the parish. Locally, Lucea is also known for a variety of yam grown in the area, sold across Jamaica as the “Lucea yam.”

FIRSTHAND Ocean Escape’s host, Phillip, says guests who venture into Lucea itself, rather than staying only at the villa or the bigger resort towns, usually come back describing it as a quieter, more local look at Jamaica than Montego Bay or Negril’s tourist strips.

Most visitors base their trip around whichever part of the northwest coast suits them best. Our guide to where to stay in Jamaica compares Montego Bay, Negril and the Lucea corridor in between, where Ocean Escape is based.
