Where to Stay Near Tryall and Northwest Jamaica

Tryall is the name many travellers know on this stretch of coast, mostly for its golf course and villas. Where you sleep is a wider choice than the Tryall Club, and the right answer depends on how much of the trip you want to spend inside a gate.

Short answer

Near Tryall you can stay in a villa inside the gated Tryall Club, rent a house in Hopewell or Sandy Bay on the same coast road, or base yourself further west in Lucea. The club suits golfers and people who want one estate. The other two give up the gate for quieter, self-catering stays and a drive to Montego Bay.

Last checked October 14, 2026. Tryall's location, reopening status and beach details were checked against the sources listed below. Drive times are typical and vary with traffic.

Tryall sits in Hanover Parish on the coast road west of Montego Bay, a few kilometres beyond Hopewell and Round Hill, with Sandy Bay on its western edge, according to Moon Jamaica. It began as a sugar plantation and is now a resort and villa community built around a historic great house and a golf course. When people search for somewhere to stay near Tryall, they usually mean one of two things: a villa inside the club, or a quieter base on the same coast without the gate.

Both are reasonable. They give you different holidays, and this page sets them beside a third option, a self-catering base in Lucea, so you can see what each one trades away.

Inside the Tryall Club

The club covers roughly 2,200 acres of former sugar land, according to Caribbean Journal, and it is the reason this part of the coast has a name at all. Moon Jamaica calls it an upscale hotel and villa complex beside one of the Caribbean's top golf courses. A venue listing also mentions a beach cafe on site. For golfers, and for travellers who want everything on one estate, that is the point of it.

Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica in late 2025, and the club reopened on 13 December of that year. A Caribbean Journal report from the same month said more than 70 percent of villas were fully operational, with the beach, restaurants, tennis complex, spa and golf course open. The Great House was still closed for restoration. That is the latest published status we found, so treat it as a starting point and ask the club or the villa owner what is open on your dates.

The downside is the one built into any gated estate. You pay for the setting, you follow the club's rules, and Jamaica outside the gate is a drive away. It suits golfers and groups who want a managed villa stay. It suits travellers who like to wander into a town for dinner on foot badly.

Hopewell, Round Hill and Sandy Bay: the same coast without the gate

Moon Jamaica places Hopewell just west of Montego Bay, past the Great River, and describes a modest, active fishing town with a small grocery, a bank machine and a few casual restaurants serving Jamaican food. On Friday evenings a sound system often slows traffic through town ahead of a busy Saturday market. Round Hill comes next, then Tryall, then Sandy Bay, which Moon describes as a growing residential community with new housing going up quickly.

The appeal is the coast without the estate. A rental here puts you among everyday local life, close enough to Montego Bay for a day out and far enough that nights are quiet. The Jamaica Beach Guide describes Tryall Beach as a small public stretch beside the North Coast Highway, about 200 metres long, with generally calm water, no fee and no lifeguard, and a restaurant next door. That edition dates from 2020 and notes erosion that had left rocks exposed in places, so check conditions locally. Do not expect a long strip like Seven Mile Beach.

Fewer facilities is the trade. Plan on a car or a driver for most evenings, and look hard at what each listing is near, because "near Tryall" on a booking site can mean a few minutes or a good deal more.

Lucea as a base for the northwest coast

Lucea is Hanover's parish capital, further west along the same road. From our villa, Sangster International, Montego Bay and Negril are each about 30 minutes away in typical conditions, and traffic can add to that. On a week or longer that makes Lucea a workable hub. Tryall and the Montego Bay side lie one way, Negril's sunsets the other, and you unpack once.

The cost is that nothing here is on your doorstep. If Tryall itself is the destination, a golf week for example, Lucea is the wrong base and the club or Sandy Bay is the right one. Our guide to Lucea covers what the town is like day to day.

One practical point applies wherever you book. Ask the host for a door-to-door time at the hour you land, because the coast road at the end of an afternoon is not the coast road late at night.

Who this suits, and who it doesn't

Stay at or near Tryall if:

  • Golf is one of the main reasons for the trip
  • You want villa living with resort facilities on one estate
  • You are happy with quiet nights and a drive for anything beyond the gate

Look at Lucea or elsewhere instead if:

  • You want to split the trip between Negril and Montego Bay from one base
  • You would rather have a self-catering house in a local town than a club stay

Ocean Escape is a 2-bedroom villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay and the airport in typical traffic. It has a full kitchen, pool access and solar power, so a week here can mean cooking some meals and driving out for beaches on the days you choose.

Could Ocean Escape fit this trip?

It fits travellers who want a self-catering base on the northwest coast and treat Tryall, or the Montego Bay side generally, as a day out. It suits less well if you plan to golf at Tryall every day, or want a club's facilities and staff on your doorstep. For that trip, a villa at Tryall or a rental in Sandy Bay is the better call.

Common questions

Where is Tryall in Jamaica?

Tryall is in Hanover Parish on Jamaica's northwest coast, west of Montego Bay beyond Hopewell and Round Hill. Sandy Bay borders it to the west, according to Moon Jamaica.

How far is Tryall from Montego Bay airport?

A venue listing gives about 35 minutes by road from Sangster International. That is a typical figure rather than a guarantee, and traffic on the coast road can add to it.

Is the Tryall Club open after Hurricane Melissa?

It reopened on 13 December 2025. A Caribbean Journal report that month said more than 70 percent of villas were operating and the golf course, beach, restaurants and spa were open, while the Great House was still closed for restoration. Confirm the current position with the club or your villa owner before you book.

Can I stay near Tryall without staying in the Tryall Club?

Yes. Hopewell, Round Hill and Sandy Bay sit on the same coast road, and Sandy Bay borders Tryall on its western side. These are modest local communities with fewer tourist facilities, so most stays there need a car or a driver.

Is Lucea a good base for visiting Tryall?

It works for trips that also include Negril and Montego Bay, since both are about 30 minutes from Lucea in typical conditions. It is the wrong base if you want to be at Tryall every day.
