Independent Jamaica Holiday: How to Plan Beyond the Resort
Skipping the all-inclusive doesn't mean winging it. The trips that go well are usually the ones where transport and the first night's food were sorted before the plane landed.
To plan an independent Jamaica holiday, pick one well-placed base, decide how you'll get around before you land, and book two or three licensed day trips while leaving the rest of the week open. Self-catering villas and guesthouses on the west and northwest coast suit this style. It suits people less if they want to walk everywhere or prefer meals and drinks in one price.
Last checked October 2026. Hurricane recovery status checked against AP reporting from October 2026; travel advisory checked against the US State Department page for Jamaica; licensing rules checked against TPDCo guidance; driving and rental rules cross-checked against the Jamaica Tourist Board's vehicle rental page and rental company terms.
Most first trips to Jamaica are resort trips, and for good reason: one booking covers the room, the food and often the airport transfer. Going independent swaps that convenience for choice. You eat where you like and pick your own beaches, and more of what you spend reaches local businesses. You also take on the logistics that a resort would otherwise handle, and in Jamaica the logistics are mostly about transport.
Resort or independent: the options compared
| Style | Best for | Trade-offs | Logistics |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-inclusive resort | Short stays, travellers who want no planning, families who want food and kids' clubs on site | You see little beyond the gates unless you pay for excursions; the price is fixed whether you use it or not | Transfer often arranged by the resort; very little to organise |
| Town hotel or guesthouse in Montego Bay or Negril | Independent travellers without a car who want to walk to restaurants and the beach | Busier areas; you pay per meal and per outing | Licensed taxi or shuttle from the airport; taxis and tours for days out |
| Self-catering villa on the northwest coast | Couples, families and groups who want space, a kitchen and access to both Montego Bay and Negril | Quiet in the evenings; little within walking distance | Hire car or arranged transport; Lucea is about 30 minutes from Montego Bay and from Negril, traffic depending |
| Two-base road trip | Trips of eight nights or more that want the north coast and the west | Packing and check-in days eat into the holiday | Needs a car or a booked driver; plan a one-way route so you don't double back |
Start with one base
The most common mistake on a first independent trip is moving too often. Jamaica's coastal roads are mostly single-carriageway, so a hop that looks short on a map can take a morning. On a week-long trip, one base nearly always beats two.
Where that base should be depends on how you'll travel. Without a car, Montego Bay or central Negril put restaurants and the beach on foot. With a car, or a driver you trust, the stretch of Hanover Parish between them gives you quieter beaches and both towns within reach.

Sort transport before you land
This is the part a resort quietly does for you, so it's the part to settle first.
Hire car
A car gives you the most freedom outside the resort towns. Jamaica drives on the left, speed limits are posted in kilometres per hour, and most rental firms want drivers aged 25 or over, with some renting from 23 for a daily surcharge. Rules on how long a foreign licence is valid differ between sources, so check with your rental company before you travel. If you've never driven on the left, the A1 coast road at night is a hard place to learn.
Licensed taxis and coaches
Licensed taxis carry red PPV plates, and JUTA is the main tourist taxi association. Fares are not metered, so agree the price before you get in, and agree whether it's in US or Jamaican dollars. Between towns, Knutsford Express runs coaches on routes that include Montego Bay, Lucea and Negril. Timetables change, so check the company's own site or app close to the date. Ride-hailing apps operate on the island too, though their legal position has been the subject of ongoing debate.
A driver for the day
For a big outing, booking a driver for the day often works out simpler than a hire car, especially for groups. Ask your host or accommodation for someone they use regularly.
Book a few days out and leave the rest open
Independent doesn't have to mean improvised. Two or three planned outings across a week is a comfortable pace. From the west and northwest coast, popular choices include Rose Hall Great House outside Montego Bay, Mayfield Falls in the hills of Westmoreland, the Blue Hole mineral spring at Brighton, and sunset at Rick's Café on Negril's West End cliffs. Opening days can still change after the hurricane, so check before you set off.
Tourism businesses in Jamaica are required to hold a Jamaica Tourist Board licence, and TPDCo handles the licensing. Ask for the licence before you pay. A 2024 Gleaner investigation found unlicensed attractions still operating, so a listing on a booking site doesn't prove much.
Food and money
Self-catering changes the budget more than anything else. Supermarkets in Montego Bay, Lucea and Negril cover the basics, and jerk stands and local cook shops are where you'll find most of the island's everyday cooking. Prices can be quoted in either currency, so it's worth carrying some Jamaican dollars for small purchases. Our guide to money in Jamaica covers cards, cash machines and tipping.
Check the recovery picture for your dates
Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica in October 2025. A year on, the airports and main tourism areas are open, but recovery is uneven. In October 2026 AP reported that about 20 hotels remained closed, mostly in the northwest, and the tourism minister now expects the sector to recover fully by May 2027. For an independent traveller that mostly means checking each booking directly, down to the restaurant you've read about.
Hurricane season runs from June to November. Travel insurance that covers storms is worth having, and our cancellation guide explains what booking platforms do and don't cover. On safety, the US State Department rated Jamaica Level 2, "exercise increased caution", in its June 2026 advisory, with specific neighbourhoods flagged separately. UK and Canadian travellers should read their own government's advice.
Who this suits, and who it doesn't
Go independent if:
- You like choosing where to eat and want to try local food beyond a buffet
- You're comfortable driving on the left or arranging transport
- You're a family or group who would use a kitchen and shared living space
Choose a resort instead if:
- Your trip is four nights or fewer and you don't want to spend any of it organising
- You want drinks, meals and entertainment covered by one price
- You'd rather not drive and don't want to rely on taxis or booked drivers
Ocean Escape is a 2-bedroom self-catering villa in a gated community in Lucea, about 30 minutes from Montego Bay and from Negril, traffic depending. It has a full kitchen, private pool access and a public beach a short walk across the road, which makes it a practical base for an independent trip with a car.
Check your datesCould Ocean Escape fit this trip?
It fits independent travellers who'll cook some meals, drive or book transport, and prefer quiet evenings. It suits less well if you plan to rely on walking, or if you want nightlife on the doorstep. For those trips, a town hotel in Montego Bay or central Negril is the better call.

Can you do Jamaica without an all-inclusive?
Yes. Plenty of visitors stay in villas, guesthouses and town hotels and plan their own days. It takes more organising up front, mainly around transport and food, and it suits travellers who want to cook some meals, eat locally and choose their own day trips.
What is the easiest way to get around Jamaica independently?
A hire car gives the most freedom outside Montego Bay and Negril, but Jamaica drives on the left and most rental firms set a minimum age of 23 to 25. Without a car, use licensed taxis with red PPV plates, Knutsford Express coaches between towns, or a driver booked for the day. Agree taxi fares, and the currency, before you set off.
How do I know a Jamaican tour or attraction is licensed?
Tourism businesses in Jamaica are required to hold a Jamaica Tourist Board licence, processed by TPDCo. Ask the operator for its licence before you pay. A 2024 Gleaner investigation found unlicensed attractions still operating, so a listing on a tour site is not proof.
Is it a good time to plan an independent trip after Hurricane Melissa?
Airports and the main tourism areas are open, but recovery is uneven. In October 2026 AP reported about 20 hotels still closed, mostly in the northwest, and the tourism minister expects full recovery by May 2027. Confirm that any specific property, restaurant or tour is running before you book.
Do I need a car if I stay on the northwest coast?
Not for every day, but you will want a car or arranged transport for most outings. Lucea is about 30 minutes from Montego Bay and from Negril in typical traffic, and there is little you can walk to compared with the resort strips.
